2025 AARE Conference Update

University of Newcastle

Getting to Newcastle for the 2025 AARE Conference 30 Nov – 4 Dec

We are delighted to invite you to our beautiful city of Newcastle and our University of Newcastle City Campus for this year’s conference. Please ensure you save the dates in your calendar! We are busy conceptualising the conference theme, updating the conference website and gearing up towards the call for papers, so watch this space over the next couple of months!

We’ve already had lots of enquiries about getting to and staying in Newcastle.

Newcastle has a range of convenient transport options available:

  • Air: Newcastle Airport is a 25-minute drive from the CBD, and you can fly direct to Newcastle from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide and the Gold Coast, as well as regional cities including Ballina/Byron Bay, Dubbo, Whitsundays, Sunshine Coast and Taree. Coach and hire car options are available at the airport. As with the capital cities, taxis and Ubers from the airport can be costly ($60-$70) but sharing will significantly reduce costs.
  • Rail: Newcastle Interchange is a relaxing 2.5-hour train trip from Sydney. The Newcastle and Central Coast services depart regularly from Sydney’s Central Station, Strathfield, Epping and Hornsby. Additionally, TrainLink's inter-city services connect Brisbane to Newcastle via the regional cities of Casino, Grafton, Wauchope and Taree, while northwestern services from Armidale, Tamworth, Moree and Narrabri also arrive here.
  • Road: Newcastle is an easy two-hour drive up the coast from Sydney, if you prefer to drive. From Sydney, head north on the M1. Just over an hour north of Wahroonga on Sydney’s upper North Shore is the turn-off for Newcastle, and from there follow the signs and you’ll hit the CBD in around 30 minutes. (Source: Visit Newcastle: Getting here and around)

Newcastle also has a great range of accommodation options at various price ranges. We will have a selection of conference accommodation deals available soon on the conference website. But in the meantime, please feel free to check out some of the options available here

See Visit Newcastle for more information, and feel free to get in touch via email at conference@aare.edu.au while we are updating the website with all the relevant details.

Looking forward to seeing you here later in the year,
Wendy Taggart and Sally Patfield
