Abstract

Developing educators to deal with the various educational arenas they will find themselves in and address the modern complex challenges would only be complete by considering transversal skills. This study investigates how these skills have been incorporated into initial teacher education in Indonesia, particularly regarding undergraduate student teachers’ and teacher trainers’ perceptions and experiences. The study employs a qualitative approach grounded in the Activity Theory as the analytical lens, using in-depth interviews as a data collection technique to elicit participant insights. Some contradictions emerge from this investigation on current integration practices as well as its findings, which necessitate urgent policy interventions that are targeted. In addition, the paper uncovers possibilities of utilising this model at scale and adapting it, thereby making significant contributions towards improving teacher education practices, especially in Indonesia, where it may help shape global educational strategies.
