Abstract:
This paper reports on an early phase of a study with early career teachers about developing a community of practice where graduate teachers feel supported as teachers and learners. Early career teachers have become a focus of educational research with a large body of this research centering on rates of early career attrition, and some of the reasons for this attrition. It is recognised that a key factor in retaining early career teachers is providing them with appropriate support. The significance of the study to be reported lies in its focus on supporting early career teachers through the celebration of their successes. This paper identifies a range of strategies that appear to be effective in allowing early career teachers to celebrate their successes, and discusses one strategy in particular. The presentation also provides an opportunity for participants to share similar experiences in developing communities of practice, which focus on successes with early career teachers.
