Abstract:
People continually move between different institutionalised practices such as school, work and family life, and in the process interact with people from different professions, disciplines and cultures. In this presentation I will discuss how learning can be shaped by movements across these institutional boundaries. The discussion will be based on my work in an alternative education setting where the students are required to cross multiple boundaries on a daily basis. Activity Theory will be used to conceptualise the major factors impacting on the students and their learning in the boundary zone, and Expansive Learning Theory will be used as a framework to explain the learning process and outcomes.
